Reconnecting with Your Core Self
So much of our lives are shaped by protective patterns—ways we’ve learned to adapt, survive, and navigate the world. These patterns, often formed early in life, shape our relationships, our emotional responses, and the way we see ourselves. But they aren’t the full truth of who we are.
Beneath the layers of conditioning, fear, and defense mechanisms lies something deeper, steadier, and wiser—our core Self. In the Internal Family Systems (IFS) model, this Self is not something we need to create, earn, or build—it’s already within us.
But when we feel overwhelmed, anxious, or stuck in familiar patterns, accessing this core can feel impossible. That’s where the 8 Cs of Self come in—a framework that helps us recognize when we’re connected to our true Self versus when we’re operating from a place of fear, avoidance, or protection.
When we engage with the world from Self-energy, we move through life with clarity, curiosity, and compassion rather than reactivity or control. We become more responsive instead of reactive, grounded instead of chaotic, and intentional instead of caught in old cycles.
So how do we recognize Self-energy? We look for the 8 Cs.
The 8 Cs of Self
1. Clarity
Seeing yourself, others, and situations with honesty—not clouded by fear, old stories, or emotional reactivity. When you’re in Self-energy, you see things as they are, rather than through the lens of past wounds or unmet expectations. Clarity allows us to respond rather than react, and it helps us break free from distorted narratives we’ve carried for years.
2. Curiosity
The ability to ask, “What’s really going on here?” instead of jumping to judgment. Curiosity allows us to explore emotions, triggers, and behaviors without shame or self-criticism. When we meet ourselves and others with curiosity, we open the door to deeper understanding and transformation.
3. Compassion
Holding space for yourself and others with kindness and care. True compassion isn’t about rescuing or fixing—it’s about witnessing and honoring the human experience with gentleness. Self-energy allows us to extend that same care inward, offering ourselves grace as we navigate challenges.
4. Confidence
A deep, quiet trust in your ability to meet life as it is. Confidence in Self-energy isn’t about ego or performance. It’s about knowing, deep down, that you can handle whatever arises—that you don’t need to control everything, because you trust yourself to respond.
5. Creativity
The ability to see new possibilities and approach life with openness. When we are in Self-energy, we move beyond rigid thinking and explore new ways of being. Creativity isn’t just about art—it’s about problem-solving, adaptability, and the courage to envision something different.
6. Courage
The willingness to step into discomfort, face fears, and move toward what matters. Courage isn’t about being fearless—it’s about acting in alignment with our deeper truth, even when fear is present. When we move from Self, we’re able to challenge old narratives and step into new ways of being.
7. Connectedness
A deep sense of belonging—to yourself, to others, and to something greater. True connection starts within. When we are in Self-energy, we feel at home in our own skin and naturally extend that connection outward—to our relationships, our communities, and the world around us.
8. Calm
A sense of inner steadiness, even when life is uncertain. Calm doesn’t mean life is without difficulty. It means we’re able to navigate challenges without becoming consumed by them. From this place, we can approach situations with presence and intentionality rather than urgency and overwhelm.
Recognizing When You're in Self vs. When You're Not
It’s not about being in Self-energy all the time—that’s not realistic. But when we notice we’re moving from anxiety, defensiveness, or avoidance, we can pause and ask: Which of these 8 Cs feels unavailable to me right now?
Am I lacking clarity because I’m stuck in an old story?
Have I lost curiosity and moved into judgment?
Am I acting from fear rather than confidence?
Do I feel disconnected—from myself, my values, or the people around me?
This isn’t about self-criticism—it’s about self-awareness. The more we notice where we are, the easier it becomes to shift back into Self-energy.
Applying the 8 Cs in Everyday Life
Recognizing these qualities in yourself is one thing—embodying them is another. Here are some ways to actively cultivate Self-energy:
Pause Before Reacting → When you feel triggered, take a breath and ask: Which C do I need right now?
Practice Curiosity → Instead of judgment, ask: What else might be true here?
Return to the Body → Somatic practices like grounding, breathwork, or movement can help bring you back into Self-energy.
Engage in Reflection → Journaling, therapy, or quiet contemplation can help you track shifts in your energy.
Final Thoughts: Cultivating Self as a Practice
Accessing Self-energy isn’t a one-time event—it’s a lifelong practice of returning to yourself. It’s about noticing when you’ve been pulled into protection or fear and gently guiding yourself back to clarity, connection, and calm.
Each time we choose to engage with life from this place, we strengthen our ability to meet ourselves, our relationships, and our experiences with deeper awareness and intentionality.
